In the year 2015, the world was plunged into a nuclear war that threatened to wipe out humankind. The war abruptly ended when a massive natural calamity brought the two warring factions together and ushered in an era of peace and prosperity. After a thousand years of expansion, humans again became involved in a war, this time with an alien race. Since both sides used remotely piloted ships, the war was relatively bloodless and lasted for centuries, until finally it was agreed that the outcome would be decided by a contest of physical strength between one human and one member of the alien race. Though the alien race was physically far superior to humans, the human champion miraculously defeated his challenger, ushering in another era of peace, this one marked by human kind's drive to improve itself physically. Our story begins at the turn of the 51st century, when a satellite training facility has been constructed for the purpose of honing the skills of Earth's best and brightest for a competition to decide who is truly the epitome of the species--the "Cosmic Beauty".
All that said, the story follows Akari Kanzaki, the daughter of a past "Cosmic Beauty" and a Freshman entrant into the orbital training facility. Determined to follow in her mother's footsteps, she will train with her classmates and overcome the rigors of training, school bullies, and her own lack of self confidence in her trek toward the great competition. She is joined by a number of other students, foremost among them Kris Christopher, emotionally solid and a priestess to be from the moon. Also along for the ride are Anna Respighi, a quiet, shy girl who is Akari's other roommate, and Tanya, a rather boisterous friend of Akari's from earth.
